My heart skipped a beat this morningand#8230; | Fig and Cherry

Posted on November 5, 2012 by ChristieNorthern Rivers Stories

I went out to hang out some washing on the line this morning, and even though I was a little blurry eyed, I quickly blinked open my eyes and did a double take and#8211; was that a round green lump on the vine on the fence?

Holy cow it was! An unripe passion fruit. Excitement plus!

There was much debate in this house (mostly with myself) as to IF the vine on the back fence of our newly rented place was a passion fruit vine.

When the flowers appeared it was a dead giveaway, however, I have been anxiously waiting for at least two months for any fruit to appear.

Thanks David Attenborough.

A few weeks ago I saw an episode of that show about plants presented by David Attenborough and#8211; you know the one? Iand#8217;ve forgotten the name and#8211; anyway, it doesnand#8217;t matter, but they were talking about how flowers are pollenated by different insects and it was fascinating. Try finding the episode, seriously, itand#8217;s riveting. Iand#8217;m not being sarcastic.

One of the plants was a passion flower and it showed a really pretty orange butterfly that pollenates the flower in order for the plant to fruit.

Needless to say, the next day I hung around the vine for a good few hours trying to spot an orange butterfly. But there were none.

This is going somewhere, I promise.

The next day I was taking the clothes off the line and an orange butterfly flew out from between the crease of one of my shirts. Seriously, Iand#8217;m not making this up.

I quickly checked the vine and saw 4 more butterflies hanging around.

I began to get very excited.

Fast forward to this morning and we now have fruit! 4 fruit, to be exact.

I am growing passionfruit. (Although I didnand#8217;t plant them, water them or do anything to them in any way. See, gardening is easy. OK, that was sarcastic.)

This year I am in charge of making pavlova for dessert on Christmas Day so Iand#8217;m hoping against hope that I can use home-grown passion fruits! Fingers crossed.

By the way, if you have a no-fail pavlova recipe Iand#8217;d LOVE to have it. Pleeeeease leave me a link in the comments :)

A few other random things.

First thing: On the weekend I went to Eat Drink Blog 2012 held in Adelaide. It was a conference for food bloggers and I spoke on a panel with the lovely Ed and George about Ethics and Working with PRs.

The conference was running a bit behind schedule and our talk got cut a little short so Iand#8217;m going to post some notes from it here on the blog later this week, including some topics that we didnand#8217;t get to cover. Stay tuned!

Second thing: Usually I post a Meatless Monday post today and Iand#8217;m sorry if youand#8217;ve hopped on over here for that. I will resume Meatless Mondays next week as per usual!
